VPI Shyla

The Shyla cartridge has been a labour of love to bring a high-performance MC cartridge for under £2,000 with the VPI name on it. A cartridge that captures the sound, experience and quality VPI listens for in their music.

The journey began when listening to the ART series of Audio Technica cartridges. It caught our attention and punched above its price point. The collaborative conversation began the two companies to create a product with the foundation of AT’s long history of cartridge design, with VPI’s voicing and sound natural/musical sound. VPI founder Harry and current owner/son Mat first met the AT design team in Munich and the sketch pads and engineering wisdom came pouring out. An initial prototype was born from that meeting which brought us most of the way there. Mat followed up with a second trip out to AT’s home base in Japan to continue the communication and design for the cartridge. During that visit, VPI had a chance to visit the AT sound room and research and development facility where the new cartridge would be subjected to the highest level of quality and compliance testing.

The result was a powerhouse cartridge that was able to musically stand up to cartridges in the £10,000 range! The VPI focus of the voicing was the midrange while still making sure to accomplish strong lows and detailed highs. When hearing the cartridge in action we knew the perfect name to match its powerhouse sound was after the Weisfeld firstborn, Shyla Weisfeld.
