The 40mm aluminium-magnesium ‘M’ dome drivers provide linear frequency response, low distortion, and improved sound dispersion, resulting in highly accurate sound. Their slightly angled position in the earcups enhances the stereo image, while their acoustic load has been optimized for operation similar to that of a bass-reflex loudspeaker.
The volume of the cushions has been dimensioned for very balanced acoustics, using two materials with studied proportions. Microfiber linearizes the bass register and sound diffusion, while acoustic fabric combines absorption and linearization in the 3-9 kHz range. Low frequencies and midrange are remarkably balanced and articulate. The high midrange is extremely precise. The thermosensitive, high-resilience memory foam used offers excellent coupling to different face shapes.
Developed and manufactured in Focal’s workshops, the 40mm full-range aluminium/magnesium ‘M’ dome electrodynamic speaker drivers are an innovation of our engineers. Aluminium increases dome rigidity and greatly reduces distortion, while magnesium provides excellent damping. This alloy enables the drivers to deliver deep bass, natural highs and clear midrange for extremely accurate sound. The M-shape of the dome brings two decisive advantages: even lower directivity of the sound, for an ever more flexible listening position, and a significant gain in rigidity for the dome, which further reduces distortion and makes for artefact-free sound.
